LABORATORY AND SCIENTIFIC-TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT UNIT

The Laboratory and Scientific-Technical Infrastructure Management Unit provides comprehensive support to ensure the optimal and efficient operation of IMIBIC’s laboratories and scientific platforms. Its main functions include the management of equipment and infrastructure, coordination of shared resource usage, technical and logistical support for research activities, as well as the implementation of safety regulations and best practices in scientific work environments.

The Unit promotes the optimization of available resources and actively participates in strategic planning aimed at the development and technological adaptation of scientific spaces and equipment. All of this is done with the purpose of ensuring the continuous operability of experimental procedures, compliance with high standards of quality and good laboratory practices, and the responsible and sustainable use of specialized scientific equipment.

HISTOLOGY SERVICE

The Unit also offers a specialized histology service, for which it has a fully equipped laboratory with specific technology for performing various histological techniques, such as tissue processing (dehydration, clearing, and paraffin infiltration), paraffin embedding and block preparation, microtomy, cryotomy, histological staining, and slide mounting for microscopy.

MAIN SERVICES

Management of Shared Equipment and Infrastructure

Supervision and technical support to ensure the proper use of equipment and facilities located in IMIBIC’s shared use areas.
Registration, access control, and monitoring of equipment usage in shared laboratories.
Management and follow-up of incidents, as well as preventive and corrective maintenance of common use scientific equipment.
Organization and coordination of autoclaving and drying processes for laboratory materials in the Washing Room.
Coordination of emergency sample storage capacity in ultrafreezers, to efficiently manage available space in the event of equipment failure or malfunction in the research groups’ storage units.
Cross functional support to optimize resources in strategic planning and the technological adaptation of IMIBIC’s laboratories and scientific-technical infrastructure.

Histology Service

Tissue processing, paraffin embedding, and block preparation.
Sectioning of samples into thin slices using microtomy (for paraffin embedded samples) and cryostat (for frozen samples).
Performance of basic and special histological stains.
Mounting of histological sections for microscopy.
Automation of key processes to ensure reproducibility and efficiency.
Technical advice on histological techniques and sample preparation.

Good Practices, Sustainability, and Regulations in the Scientific Environment

Implementation and promotion of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) at IMIBIC, fostering a culture of quality in scientific activities.
Promotion of compliance with biosafety regulations and laboratory quality standards.
Support for proper laboratory waste management, in collaboration with the External Occupational Risk Prevention Service and the Quality Unit.
Implementation, monitoring, and advisory Support on the Trébol Program as a certification system for good environmental practices at IMIBIC.
Support for the application of sustainable measures in energy resource use and the integration of environmental sustainability criteria into laboratory materials, promoting more responsible and efficient research.
