About us

The Maimónides Institute for Biomedical Research in Córdoba (IMIBIC) is a health research institute established on 24 April 2008 following an agreement between the Regional Ministry of Innovation, Science and Enterprise and the Regional Ministry of Health of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and the University of Córdoba, which reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating IMIBIC as a centre of excellence and at the forefront of biomedicine through the new agreement signed on 2 February 2015 and extended on 31 January 2020 and 28 October 2024 respectively. The agreement was renewed in April 2026. The latest version of the Development Agreement can be viewed here.

In 2011, IMIBIC was accredited for health research by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Carlos III Health Institute; this accreditation is renewed every five years and remains in force, with the most recent renewal taking place on 19 September 2021.

IMIBIC, one of the 36 institutes in Spain accredited for health research by the Carlos III Health Institute, is a multidisciplinary research centre where scientists from the academic and healthcare sectors work together to improve public health and promote the social and economic development of the province of Córdoba.

The IMIBIC’s main building is located within the Reina Sofía Hospital complex and covers a total area of 10,000 m². Location

It is managed by the Córdoba Foundation for Biomedical Research (FIBICO), which was established on 27 December 2007.

Our Mission is to develop a space for scientific excellence by promoting talent, collaboration, international research and innovation, and to solve health problems in a sustainable and socially responsible way and respecting equal rights.

Our Vision is to become a consolidated center of excellence for translational research and bio-sanitary innovation, with the aim to improve people’s health and quality of life.

Quality Policy

Quality is an essential aspect of all our activities. Quality must be quantified, measured objectively, and evaluated externally by other institutions. To this end, the activities of the Institute are geared to meeting the needs of professionals, patients and other stakeholders through an Integrated Quality Management System and following the accreditation scheme of the ISCIII Health Research Institutes.

Environmental Policy

At IMIBIC we are conscious of the environmental burden generated by our research and administrative activities. We are responsible for transmitting knowledge and values concerning environmental issues within our personal, professional and social environment, by integrating criteria and principles of sustainability in our daily activities, as detailed in IMIBIC’s Strategic Plan. By this focus, we aim to increase an environmentally friendly culture throughout all our organizational units and implement activities to protect and improve our environment.

Innovation Policy

IMIBIC aims to establish itself as a centre of excellence in translational research and bio-health innovation, with a view to improving people’s health and quality of life, by creating the necessary infrastructure to foster an innovative ecosystem that facilitates this translation through direct collaboration with the business sector.

To this end, IMIBIC will promote the development of new products, services and solutions tailored to the needs of the National Health System and the socio-economic environment, paying particular attention to the implementation of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, as well as to the advancement of precision medicine.

IMIBIC’s Innovation Policy is established from a comprehensive and cross-cutting approach, aligned with the organisation’s purpose, and aimed at providing a framework for establishing the Institute’s innovation strategy and objectives. Furthermore, IMIBIC is committed to complying with the applicable requirements regarding innovation, as well as to continuously improving the effectiveness and efficiency of its Innovation Management System, in accordance with the principles set out in the ISO 56001 standard.
