The group Implementation of Physical Activity, Exercise and Wellbeing Programmes Across the Lifespan (GE-13) comprises researchers and professionals in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, as well as lecturers and researchers from the University of Córdoba. The research examines the role of physical exercise in improving muscle function, bone health and metabolic health in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, as well as in those who have or have had cancer. These groups are particularly vulnerable, especially with regard to low bone mineral density, which may be influenced by the effects of the disease and cancer treatments. This research area includes notable projects aimed at preventing the development of childhood obesity. MELIPOP is a nationwide, multicentre, randomised clinical trial designed to assess the effect of an intensive intervention programme on the prevention of obesity in children aged 3 to 6 who are at high risk of obesity. CORALS is a longitudinal study designed to identify the risk factors associated with childhood obesity. Our group is coordinating this national study with other groups within CIBEROBN to establish a cohort of Spanish children aged 3 to 6 years, with a follow-up period of at least 10 years.
This line of research focuses on the study of health-related physical fitness and on analysing the role of physical exercise as a strategy for improving functional capacity, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and other health indicators in different populations. It also examines the effects of exercise on biological mechanisms associated with health and disease, including oxidative stress, cytokines and other inflammatory markers. The aim is to generate evidence that will enable the optimisation of physical exercise prescriptions and the design of safe, personalised and effective interventions to improve health, prevent functional decline and enhance quality of life.
These initiatives aim to help delay, reduce or prevent the onset of chronic diseases, whilst promoting better health, functionality and quality of life for adults and older people, from an inclusive perspective committed to gender equality.
