We are a consolidated group of medical practitioners and researchers, most of us working in the field of Primary Care (PC) and others at the University of Córdoba and hospitals in the province of Córdoba. Our group is multidisciplinary and heterogeneous, and composed mainly of specialists in Family and Community Medicine, but it also includes professionals working in the field of Preventive Medicine and Public Health/Epidemiology, Occupational Medicine, Cardiology, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Dental health and Otorhinolaryngology, Nursing and Biology.
We approach clinical and epidemiological research from the point of view of primary care settings. Our long-term objectives are to encourage, promote and develop high quality research with practical applicability in the field of PC. Our studies include a wide range of topics, including health promotion and prevention in primary care (Luis Pérula); health communication and emotional health (Ana Roldán); medical education (Roger Ruiz); and occupational, public and environmental health (Manuel Vaquero). Our main interest in specific disease areas focuses on respiratory diseases (Antonio Hidalgo, Javier Ruiz), odontostomatology (Antonio Blanco), cardiovascular risk factors (Enrique Martín), or dermatology (Mª Carmen Arias, Enrique Villegas). We also carry out research in apnea-hipopnea syndrome (Jesús Serrano), alcohol consumption (Jose Angel Fernández, Esperanza Romero), or aging and health (Manuel Rich, Jesús González).
Some recent contributions, showing the transversal nature of our research in the area of primary care, are highlighted:
We actively collaborate with various other research groups of IMIBIC: Cell therapy (GC-14), Pneumology (GA-03), and Clinical Virology and Zoonoses (GC-26). Our external and international collaborators include Communication and Health Group and PAPPS (semFYC), Rediapp (ISC III), National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO, Lyon, France), University of Rochester (USA), Francisco de Vitoria University / School of Medicine (Madrid), EGRP (WONCA), Irish Center St. John's Community Hospital of Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford (Ireland), and Boston University School of Public Health and Boston Medical Center.
Research Lines
The research line of health promotion and prevention in primary care is led by Dr. Luis Pérula. The recent studies in this field include the evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions in Primary Care (alcohol consumption, mindfulness), validation of screening tests (atrial fibrilation, SAHS), or about cancer prevention (European Code against Cancer).
The research line of Communication and Health is led by Dra Ana Roldán. The main focus of the research in this area is to verify the effect of non-pharmacological interventions, based on clinical communication and health education (social isolation, mindfulness and work-related stress and burnout in Primary Care, etc.).
The research line of Risk factors and cardiovascular diseases is led by Dr Enrique Martín. The studies in the field aim to verify the magnitude of health problems such as atrial fibrillation, or the availability of diagnostic tools for the confirmation of arterial hypertension.
This line of research focuses on the study of intervention programs to reduce falls or social isolation and loneliness within the elderly population. The research activities in this topic are led by Manuel Rich and Dr Ana Roldán.
