Research groups

GA04 Endocrinology and Nutrition. Insulin Resistance, Diabetes and Metabolism

Our associated research group is focused on translational research and personalized medicine in endocrinology, diabetes and obesity. Specifically, our research lines are:

  • Pituitary and neuroendocrine tumors:  novel predictive and prognostic markers for diagnosis, treatment and followup; as well as the potential use of novel therapeutic options (ketoconazole, metformin, etc) for these tumors. This research line is performed in collaboration with the collaboration of the research groups of Dr. Castaño and Dr. Luque.
  • Obesity and bariatric surgery: evaluation of predictive factors for short, medium- and long-term clinical response. The study of the relation between weight changes, splicing machinery and other signaling pathways that might be related to insulin resistance and tumorigenesis. These studies are performed in collaboration with the research group of Dr. Luque
  • Obesity and reproductive function: there are two projects in this line: 1. nutritional interventions in obese women evaluated in the “Reproductive Unit” in collaboration with that unit and the research group of Dr Tena; 2. Hypogonadism in obese patients with type 2 diabetes, this project is also performed in collaboration with Dr Tena.

Our group is constituted by specialists if the Endocrinology and Nutrition Unit and hopes to integrate pre- and post-doctoral researchers, as well as other professionals (data manager, nurses). Recently, a new researcher has been incorporated in our group, Dr Herrera (Rio Hortega researcher) is responsible for the first two research lines. We also expect to start a new project for improving the non-invasive diagnosis for thyroid nodules.

We also have collaborations with the research group of Dr. Quesada Gómez; particularly, the relation between vitamin D and bone stem cells. Additionally, some multicenter, clinical trials are currently being performed in our unit.

The prevalence of endocrine disorders, diabetes and obesity are increasing worldwide, to this aim, research that may improve the clinical outcome and evolution of these diseases has a high impact in our patients and our current society.

Research Lines

Expression of different hormone receptors and intracellular mediators in the onset and development of pituitary tumors.

Evaluation of novel receptors, hormones and intracellular mediators in the development of neuroendocrine tumors. Evaluation of the effects of several drugs on cell proliferation, secretion or mRNA modifications.

Evaluation of predictor markers for clinical evolution, as well as the underlying mechanisms of the beneficial metabolic effect of the surgery.

Evaluation of the underlying mechanisms related with fertility, hypogonadism and obesity, as well as the identification of novel targets for the development of therapeutic options.
