GE02 Preventive Medicine and Public Health

We are a multidisplinary group which includes different profesional profiles such as physicians specialized in preventive medicine and public health, nurses, advisors and epidemiologists. This allows us to approach research questions from different points of view according to our broad experience.

Our group works on areas related to the field of preventive medicine and public health, with special focus on 1) surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare associated infections, 2) patient security at primary and hospital care level and 3) vaccination (adherence and adverse effects). We design and conduct retrospective and prospective observational epidemiological studies in order to explore and increase our knowledge about incidence, epidemiological features, risk factors and consequences of a given disease. We also use qualitative methodology such as focus groups, and “Knowledge, Attitude and Practices-KAP” studies related to different topics among health care proffesionals in our hospital.

Research Lines

Epidemiological studies conducted to gain knowledge in this area, with focus on high risk units (adult and neonatal intensive care) and multirresistant pathogens

Studies focused on the adherence to the different vaccination programs approved  in the hospital in order to explore causes of non-adherence. Specifically we have been studying influenza vaccine uptake among healthcare proffesionals, and vaccination in splenectomy, solid organ transplantation and biological treatment

Patient Safety is one of the main objectives in health systems quality. Our research so far  has been  focused in exploring patients´s opinión on this topic

Additional Information

Our group was assembled at the end of 2017. During 2018 we have led two scientific proposals for national and regional tenders (Convocatoria FIS and Consejería de salud de Andalucía). None of them were succesfull. We have collaborated with other partners in several regional and international tenders with pending results.

During 2018 we have initiated a collaboration with researchers from the Intensive Care Unit at our hospital and we are conducting a large prospective epidemiological study aiming to study risk factors for microbial colonization in the unit. Firs results will be available at the end of 2019.

Our group is strongly linked to the faculty of medicine at Cordoba University. Five of us are associate lecturers and all residents are collaborators. During 2018 we supervised three final degree projects. Two of them were evaluated in april 2018 with an  excellent evaluation. The third one´s evaluation is pending. We are currently supervising six aditional final degree projects to be finished in 2020. All the topics covered in these projects are within our prioiritized research lines.

During 2018, members of our group have presented four oral communications and eleven posters in several regional, national and international conferences. Three of them have receieved an award: Rafael Ruiz Montero recieved the prize for the best communication at the 9th IMIBIC Young Investigators Meeting and at the SAMPSP conference. Bernardo Guzmán recieved the thid prize in the same conference.
