Justo P. Castaño was born in 1964. He graduated and obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Cordoba and completed his postdoctoral training at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, USA. He is currently Scientific Director and Head of the Hormones and Cancer Research Group of the Maimonides Institute of Biomedical Research of Cordoba. He is also Head of the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology of the University of Cordoba.

Professor Castaño’s research has been focused over the last two decades on the regulation of pituitary cell types by neuropeptides, including somatostatin, cortistatin, GHRH, ghrelin, and kisspeptins, and on the molecular biology of these peptides, their receptors and signalling pathways in health and disease. More recently, these studies have been directed toward elucidating the presence and functional relevance of different types of neuropeptides and their receptors on human pituitary adenomas and neuroendocrine tumours and in various types of cancers.

Professor Castaño has received the Prize to a Research Career in Neuroendocrinology from the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition. He has published over 125 scientific articles and 50 book chapters and has contributed over 300 congress communications. He serves as Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Systems and Translational Endocrinology, Senior Editor for the Journal of Molecular Endocrinology and the Journal of Endocrinology, and as editorial board member of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine, and World Journal of Diabetes. Professor Castaño serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several journals, including Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrinology, Endocrine Related Cancer, Journal of Biological Chemistry, etc.

He has served as President of the Iberian Society for Comparative Endocrinology (2009-2013) and as member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE; 2010-2014). Professor Castaño has chaired the Programme Organising Committee (POC) of the 15th European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE) in Copenhagen in 2013 and the Congress of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN) in 2015. He has also served as a member of the POC of the 2008 International Congress of Endocrinology (ICE) in Rio de Janeiro, the 2010 European Neuroendocrine Association (ENEA) Meeting in Liege, the 2014 ECE in Wroclaw, and the 2012 ICE/ECE in Florence, and has co-chaired the Basic Endocrinology Courses of the ESE held in Cordoba (2006) and Turin (2009). He has also directed 10 doctoral theses and has registered 4 patents.

Bachelor (magna cum laude) and doctor in Medicine by the University of Cordoba in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Dr.Tena is a full professor at the Department of Phisiology of the School of Medicine of the University of Cordoba since 2007, where he has taught degree, master and/or doctorate courses in Medicine since 1995.

He is the principal investigator of the Biomedical Research Center Pathophysiology of Obesity and Nutrition (Health Institute Carlos III) and of the research group Hormone regulation of energy balance, puberty and reproduction of IMIBIC. He is also the Deputy Research Manager of IMIBIC since 2012.

He has been the principal investigator of a broad range of research projects funded by the Plan Nacional de I+D+i, European Framework Programs, the Health Institute Carlos III and the Junta de Andalucía (Excellence Projects), as well as of a variety of collaboration agreements with international pharmaceutical companies.

Up to date, Dr. Tena Sempera is the author of more than 200 papers published in high-impact international journals of the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Reproduction, Neurosciences and similar fields, with more than 5920 quotes and a h-index = 44.

Some of the prizes and awards he has been awarded for his scientific activity are:

  • 1st Prize "Tercer Milenio" Jóvenes Investigadores of the Junta de Andaluciá (2001);
  • Award of the Association of Neuroendocrinology Award for Young Researchers (2004)
  • Award of the Spanish Association of Endocrinology and Nutrition in Neuroendocrinology (2008)
  • Award of the European Society of Endocrinology-(ESE)-European Journal of Endocrinology Prize (<45 years) (2011)*
  • Award of the American Society of Endocrinology- Memorial Richard E. Weitzman Award (<43 years) (2012)*

Dr. Tena is a member of a diversity of scientific societies and national and international scientific advisory committees, which include:

  • Assistant coordinator of the Area of Biomedicine of the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP, Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness) since 2009.
  • Expert and Scientific Representative of the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Security and Equality in the European Expert Panel on Endocrine Disruptors since 2012.
  • Member of the Editorial Board of a diversit of prestigious scientific journals in the areas of Endocrinology & Metabolism and Biomedical Sciences.
  • Reviewer at a broad range of sicentific journals and national and international agencies.
  • Member of several national and international scientific societies, which include the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition, the Spanish Society of Physiological Sciences, the European Society of Endocrinology, the American Society of Endocrinology, the American Society of Physiology, the American Society of Reproductive Studies, the International Society of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology and the French Society of Neuroendocrinology.

He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Granada (2007). Then he undertook his residency and internship at the Virgen de la Victoria Hospital in Malaga. Simultaneously, he obtained a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Malaga.

Subsequently, he completed a Master in Health Economics and Management of Healthcare Organizations at the Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública (Andalusian School of Public Health), and pursued the Executive MBA at the IESE Business School of the University of Navarra In 2012 he obtained his PhD from the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the University of Malaga.

He has extensive experience in health management and has been a Project Manager and Quality Manager at the Marina Salud hospital in Alicante.
